Auxiliary verbs

We use be, have and do to form tenses, questions and with negative forms. When be, have and do are used in this way they are called auxiliary verbs.

Be

We use be + verb in ing form to form the continuous tenses:
Present continuous – He is working in Italy at the moment.
Past continuous – He was working in a hotel when I met him.

Have

We use have + past participle to form the perfect tenses:
Present perfect – She’s been here for three months.
Past perfect – The film had already started when we got there.

Do

We use do in simple tenses for questions and negative forms:
Do you know John?
I didn’t get your e-mail.

Complete the questions with the correct forms of DO, BE or Have.

the answer: Has Carl ever been involved in a fight? – Czy Carl kiedykolwiek uczestniczył w bójce?

2. What ___ an appropriate birthday present for my five-year-old nephew?

the answer: What is an appropriate birthday present for my five-year-old nephew? – Jaki jest adekwatny prezenta dla mojego pięcioletniego dziecka?

3. ___ doctors need to be good at maths?

the answer: Do doctors need to be good at maths? – Czy lekarze muszą być dobrzy z matematyki?

4. Why ___ Kelly so miserable today?

the answer: Why is Kelly so miserable today? – Czemu Kelly wygląda dzisiaj na tak zdezelowaną?

5. Which sports ___ you keen on?

the answer: Which sports are you keen on? – Jakie sporty Cię interesują?

6. How much ___ they pay for their children’s dance lessons?

the answer: How much do they pay for children’s dance lessons? – Ile płacą za lekcje tańca dzieci?

Complete the questions with the correct forms of DO, BE or Have.

W pierwszym zdaniu pytamy się o doświadczenie życiowe Carla. Dlatego użyjemy czasu present perfect. Konstrukcja pytania w tym czasie jest następująca: have/has + podmiot + imiesłów czasu przeszłego. Dla he/she/it have przyjmuje formę has, więc takiej użyjemy.

W pytaniu drugim użyjemy czasu present simple. Kiedy tworzymy w nim pytania z czasownikiem to be, wykorzystujemy jego odpowiednią formę. W tym wypadku jest to is (prezent = 3 os. l.poj).

W trzecim pytaniu też wykorzystamy czas presnt simple, jednakże w tym wypadku czasownik jest inny niż to be. W takiej sytuacji musimy użyć do/does, które stawiamy na początku pytania. Dla każdej innej osoby niż 3 os. l. poj. używamy formy do.

W czwartym pytaniu ma miejsce sytuacja bardzo zbliżona do drugiego pytania.

W pytaniu piątym znowu mamy pytanie z wykorzystaniem to be. Uzyjemy jednak formy are, ponieważ pasuje ona do 2 os. l. poj.

W pytaniu szóstym wykorzystamy taki sam mechanizm jak w pytaniu trzecim.
