NtrC acts as an apoactivator which is phosphorylated by a specific protein kinase, called NtrB, to become an activator. The enhancer-bound phosphorylated NtrC physically contacts the promoter-bound σ54-RNA polymerase by looping out the intervening DNA sequence.

Lactose intolerance or lactase deficiency is a condition characterized by the inability of adults to digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and to a lesser extent in dairy products, causing side effects due to lactase deficiency, such as bloating, diarrhea or abdominal pain.
